The WWF Deutschland and Savespecies have joined forces to launch “SaveYour.World,” an innovative metaverse platform that uses the power of Polygon to deal with the growing problem of plastic waste in the oceans. Through the “play to donate” concept with Trash NFTs, the WWF Deutschland is hoping to create a new way to raise awareness about the ocean’s plastic pollution problem. It is estimated that 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year, and by 2025, the amount of plastic entering the ocean will double. SaveYour.World offers an immersive experience that combines online and offline action with tangible results. The entire metaverse on the highly efficient server infrastructure developed by Journee. In order to conserve energy and reduce its carbon footprint, while avoiding further pollution, the metaverse limits the number of concurrent users. As a result, individual visitors may experience wait times. However, this approach is more energy-saving than providing a larger capacity through additional servers.🗑️ Pick up your trash NFTs and remove real waste.@WWF_Deutschland launched a #Web3 virtual world #onPolygon to protect the real one 🌎🔗 https://t.co/dFVcvo1uar pic.twitter.com/BtylPDTxeG— Polygon (@0xPolygon) February 7, 2023Its native ‘Trash NFT’ collectibles, are a form of digital art that can be collected and traded but also have a real-world impact. Its Trash Whale for example, is made up of 366 NFTs of 50 different kinds, and shows how each of the human-made plastic affects the environment. By owning this NFT, owners become a part of the solution to ocean pollution and play a role in preserving our ocean’s health. So far, the results of this innovative platform have been encouraging, with 2,453 kg of plastic removed from the ocean. Visitors have the option to donate through the integrated donation columns to the following institutions – WWF, Savespecies, or World Cleanup Day – with 100% of the donation going towards their respective causes. As a collective of artists, per each Trash NFT sales, Savespecies retains 30% of the proceeds while the remaining funds are donated to WWF Germany. The environmental non-government organization then uses the funds to finance plastic reduction projects, such as the cleanup of beaches and corals on Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam.Polygon To Save the WorldBy constantly researching and using the power of blockchain and Web3 technology, the Polygon network has shown that it has the potential to help solve big environmental problems. In 2020, Polygon Labs started a study on emissions and how Layer 1 and Layer 2 blockchain operations interact with each other. Polygon is also creating a climate offset vertical within its ecosystem and has pledged $20 million to a series of community initiatives, including funding projects that utilize technology to combat climate change. Even though Web3 and blockchain technology are still in their early stages, they have a lot of potential to help solve the environmental crisis we are facing right now. Want more?
